Sibling Rivalry

If you let social media tell it, sibling rivalry is a big deal. I’ve read and watched so many posts by other social media users who had to cut off contact with their sibling or siblings because of years of sibling rivalry. Some chalk it up to jealousy, some chalk it up to competition and others chalk it up to hate. Some users have stated this rivaly has been years in the making, starting as early as childhood and I find that hard to wrap my mind around. Now, I am not saying me and siblings never argue or had a falling out because we have, but we always made up or made peace shortly after.

I can’t recall a moment in time where I felt like I had to compete with one of my siblings or that I felt feelings of jealousy or hate. We were always raised to lift each other up and to stand by one another’s side. Did they tap dance on my last nerves at times? Yes, but that’s what siblings do at times, me included. My mother always taught us to stick together and to always have each other’s backs because at the end of the day, family is what should matter the most. Seeing and reading these terrible experiences from some users is heartbreaking because you can tell they really want to have a close relationship with their sibling or siblings, but toxic and hateful traits sometimes gets in the way which makes a close relationship impossible.

As someone who is incredibly close to my siblings, I can only hope and pray that such individuals will soon be able to have a peaceful and loving relationship with their siblings. When no one else has your back, your family should always be the one you can rely on for that. Here’s to hoping that those relationships will heal so each party can pursue peace.
